The Tuareg people are predominantly Sunni Muslims. In fact, the Tuareg sultanates of Aïr were instrumental in spreading Islam throughout Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso & Chad via conquest, trade, and conversion, their subjects/vassals often converted to Islam. Due to the frequent moving of nomadic tribes, formal standing mosques were largely uncommon. Men & women even today could often be observed praying on the sand or on a woven mat.
However, despite being Muslim, many Pre-Islamic traditions prevail in the Tuareg culture. Amulets, often considered to protect the beholders from djinn (spirits) and misfortune, are frequently crafted and given to both men & women. They're often made of metal or iron and are crafted in unique designs. Belief in spirits, misfortune, magic & etc are widespread in the Tuareg culture.
